The settlement of Laglingarten was originally a farming township lying along two burns and known as Laglingartenmore and Laglingartenbeg. They are recorded in the 17century as the 6 meiklands of the twoLaglingaischens. By the early 19century it was farmed by three tracks men paying rent to the Ardkinglas estate.

In the census of 1841 there were thirteen houses of which only three remain, the Farmhouse, the Cottage and Rosemary Cottage. Traces of others could still be seen in the fields around until a few years ago when grazing was discontinued.

The fail (turf) dykes, the ridge and furrows cultivation and the lime burning area could also be traced. The old track from the loch side up and through the settlement and on up the hill to the sheilings and peat hogs could also be walked. In the 18 century three fishing boats were registered in the settlement.

The farmhouse until a few years ago was lived in by descendents of one of the original tracksmen, Brodie , whose family were there for 200 years. One of them was John Brodie, the schoolmaster in Cairndow in the 19th century.

The stone barn was designed in 1905 by Lorimer and the red corrugated iron barn was erected from materials left behind from World War Two. The field track and clapper bridge over the burn were strengthened and widened for use by tanks during the areas use in training for the D-Day landings.

In the cottage we have retained as much of the original 19th century fabric as possible and have uncovered some areas which have been behind plasterboard walls. In the kitchen there was a fireplace wide enough for a kitchen range and with a large stone lintel, having still in place the original iron pot chain, kettle and girdle. In the sitting room a deep cupboard with selves set within the thickness of the wall and a wood lined ceiling which had been whitewashed with distemper. We still have, downstairs the 19th century pre-sash windows with their support catches and shutters. On the outside we used the Scottish Ethnology Archive to research appropriate replacement dormer windows.
