Garden Cottage 1960 - 1969
Garden Cottage is situated several hundred yards from Ardkinglas House, down beside the loch. A garden and lawn are in front of the house, with a hedge all round.
A porch is at the front door. To the left is a shed, which is part of the building. Going in through the front door is a very small hall; to the left is quite a large room, with a fireplace on the opposite wall to the door. A window faces towards the loch.
To the right of the front door is the kitchen/living room. The fire is a Triplex stove, which is used for cooking and baking, it also heats the water. The hot water tank is in the corner beside the fire. There is a large walk in cupboard below the stairs, with a window looking out the back towards the greenhouses. The window of the living room looks towards the loch.
Through from the living room is the scullery/bathroom. This is a long narrow room. The sink is at the window, which also looks to the loch. The bath is along the back wall and has a sky light above it. The toilet is at the end of the room. A small window looks up the back. There is also, an outside toilet, which backs onto the house toilet; it is entered by an outside door.
The stair goes straight up from the front door. Quite a large window is on the landing at the top of the stairs. This window is above the window in the downstairs cupboard.
To the left of the stairs is a bedroom, behind the door is a recess which probably once had a box bed. Opposite it is a fireplace. A window looks to the loch.
To the right of the stairs is another bedroom, it too has a recess, a fireplace and a window, but it also has a small room going off it. The bow room has a small room to the front.
All the interior doors are made of beautiful varnished wood with brass latches.
In 1970 the Triplex stove was taken out and an open brick fire was built in its place. The hot water tank was boxed in, and the bathroom and scullery were separated into two rooms. The scullery to the back and the bathroom to the back. The outside toilet was done away with and the room was added to the bathroom. The varnished doors were painted over. Several years later, some of them were returned to their original varnish.
May 2003, a window was put in the back wall of the living room/kitchen, letting in more light. A sink unit, fridge and cooker are now along that wall. The living room now has a laminated wood floor.
